Driving Tips:
Trailer sway can be an incredibly stressful scenario, even for seasoned tower operators. If you ever encounter this situation, keep this phrase in mind:
✅ Gas off
✅ Brake off
✅Steer straight
✅ And WAIT
DO NOT attempt to control sway by turning the steering wheel as it will only make the issue worse. If you have a brake controller, gently apply only the trailer brakes. For more tips on safely driving with a trailer, visit https://buff.ly/3C7u45lSafe and proper driving is a critical piece of trailer safety. Drivers should be focused and limit or eradicate distractions. #TrailerSafetyWeek #SafeTrailering #KeepOnHauling
Towing involves the interaction of several components: the driver, tow vehicle, and trailer. Each of these contributes to the towing experience and safety of the combination. The driver is responsible for selecting the right tow vehicle and trailer for the load, hitching the unit, loading, steering, speed, and braking. All components of the tow vehicle and trailer affect towing. #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety
Trailers are used every single day across the country. From construction trailers for roadway maintenance to concession trailers at your local fair, knowing how to trailer safely is key. 🔑
📝 We've put together a list of things you should #KnowBeforeYouTow. 📝

Be sure to allocate extra space and time when driving with a trailer to prioritize safety on the road.
Allow Yourself More Time While You:
✅ Merge with the flow of traffic
✅ Prepare for braking
✅ Make a lane change
✅ Turn cornersWhen towing a trailer, make time to practice before driving on main roads, and never allow anyone to ride in or on the trailer. Before you leave, remember to check routes and restrictions on bridges and tunnels.

Hitching:
There are various devices used to hitch a trailer to a tow vehicle. Understanding hitches and the proper hitch for the trailer and load is vital to ensuring a safe and smooth towing experience. After deciding the appropriate hitch system, properly hitching the trailer to the tow vehicle will help to ensure the combination remains attached, and should the coupler fail, correctly attached safety chains should be your next line of defense. #Hitching #TrailerSafetyWeek
Terms to know while selecting the best hitch for your trailer and tow vehicle:
Hitches and Receivers- Refer to the device attached to the tow vehicle which adapts it to pull a trailer.
Ball Mount- A ball-shaped attachment that connects the tow vehicle hitch/receiver and the trailer’s coupler.
Trailer Coupler- Device attached to the trailer tongue that connects to the ball mount.
Tongue- The arm that extends from the front of the trailer that includes the coupler.
Did you know that safety chains are your first line of defense if the trailer detaches? An important step in the hitching process is properly setting up safety chains.
Follow these 3 MUSTS the next time you're preparing to tow:
❌ Cross safety chains underneath the coupler.
⚠️ Allow slack for the trailer to turn.
⛓️ Attach chain hooks securely to the tow vehicle frame.
#TrailerTip #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety #TrailerIndustry #KeepOnHauling #SafetyChainsAs we celebrate Trailer Safety Week, it’s crucial to address a common issue plaguing our roadways: hitch misuse. While it's tempting to opt for a heavy-duty hitch for towing purposes, many overlook the importance of matching the hitch capacity to the tow vehicle's specifications. This oversight can lead to serious safety hazards on the road. Let's discuss the significance of proper hitching practices and how we can prevent mishaps in towing. https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/blog/hitch-mishaps
Ready to take on the roads with confidence? 🚛💡 Follow this step-by-step guide by our TSW partner, CURT Manufacturing, to ensure your trailer hitching is nothing short of secure and reliable. Because when it comes to towing, safety isn’t an option, it’s a necessity.
From inspecting your hitch components to double-checking your brake lights, each step is a crucial piece to a safer journey. Let's honor Trailer Safety Week not just with words but with proactive measures that keep us and others safe as we embark on the road.
For more hitching tips, visit www.TrailerSafetyWeek.comThe three most common types of hitches are:
👉 Weight-carrying hitch: Weight-carrying hitches are designed to carry all of the trailer’s tongue weight.
👉 Weight-distributing \(or load equalizer\) hitch: Weight-distributing hitches are used with a receiver hitch and special parts that distribute the tongue weight among all tow vehicle and trailer axles.
👉 Fifth-wheel hitch and gooseneck: These hitches are designed to mount the trailer connection in the middle of the truck bed.
When buying a hitch, use the tow vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations based on the trailer type and gross vehicle weight rating. Learn more about hitching here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/hitching/The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has designated four weight classes for trailer hitches which can be helpful in determining if you have the right hitch for your intended load.
1️⃣ Hitch Class 1 - Capacity of up to 2K lbs. gross trailer weight and 200 lbs. tongue weight.
2️⃣ Hitch Class 2 - Weight carrying rating of up to 3.5K lbs. gross trailer weight and 300/350 lbs. tongue weight.
3️⃣ Hitch Class 3 - Weight carrying rating of up to 5K lbs. gross trailer weight and 500 lbs. tongue weight.
4️⃣ Hitch Class 4 - Weight carrying rating of up to 10K lbs. gross trailer weight and 1K-1.2K lbs. tongue weight.
No matter which type of hitch system is used, the hitch needs to have a strength rating equal to or greater than the GVWR of your trailer. Learn more about hitching here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/hitching/
Loading:
Fact: a properly loaded trailer is easier to control. The most common reason for losing control of your trailer is improper loading. Learn more here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/loading. #TrailerSafetyWeek #KeepOnHauling
Remember, the first step in loading should be to read your trailer owner's manual and follow its instructions. #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety #KeepOnHauling
Proper weight distribution on both the tow vehicle and the trailer (and its component parts) is essential to properly loading a trailer. Improper loading can lead to additional stress on the tow vehicle and/or trailer, leading to excessive sway or loss of control.
Balancing your load weight from side to side is equally important to achieve proper weight distribution. Tongue weight can be underloaded if the weight is not distributed properly from front to back - be sure to check your trailer owner's manual as the manufacturer sets the appropriate tongue weight. An insufficient hitch load can lead to dangerous trailer sway.
⚖️As a general rule, to achieve proper tongue weight place approximately 60% of the load forward of the axle and 40% behind the axle.⚖️
🚗 Properly loading and distributing cargo in your tow vehicle and trailer is crucial for safe and smooth travels! Here are some tips to improve control:
✅ Balance weight from side to side
✅ Distribute cargo evenly along the trailer's length or heavier in the front
✅ Secure items to prevent shifting
✅ Adjust tow vehicle/trailer interface height
✅ Consider load-leveling hitch bars if neededRemember, your trailer and tow vehicle should be level or slightly depressed at the hitch during travel. Check your manuals for specific guidelines! 🛣️
The Right Tow Vehicle & Trailer Combination:
Towing a trailer will impact how any vehicle drives. The larger the towed object in comparison to the tow vehicle, the greater the performance impact will be. Thus, knowing what your tow vehicle is capable of towing is just as important as selecting the right trailer. 🚗 Learn more here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/towvehicle. #TrailerSafetyWeek #TowVehicle #KeepOnHauling
Vehicle manufacturers provide a “tow rating” in their owner’s manuals which provides the maximum weight the tow vehicle can tow when fully loaded. The GVWR of the trailer should never exceed the tow rating of the tow vehicle, even if the trailer is not loaded to its maximum capacity. #TowRating #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety
🚗 Essential Tips for Towing Success 🚗
Remember, choosing the right tow vehicle and equipment is key to safe towing. Consult your vehicle and trailer manuals to ensure compatibility before hitting the road. Check out these tips for a smooth towing experience: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/blog/choosing-the-right-tow-vehicleIn the market for a trailer this summer? ☀️ When considering what kind of trailer to buy, ensure you are buying the right trailer for its intended purpose. Trailers not only vary based on connection, i.e. gooseneck or bumper pull, but also for their intended purpose. Talk to your dealer not only about your vehicle’s towing capacity but also the intended use of your trailer to ensure you have the right equipment for the job. Learn more about selecting the right tow vehicle and trailer combination here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/blog/choosing-the-right-tow-vehicle
Review your tow vehicle owner’s manual for specifics on its tow rating, Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR), and review your trailer owner’s manual and VIN tag to confirm the GVWR for your trailer. Do not use a tow vehicle with a max tow rating of less than the GVWR of your trailer.
🚘 Already have a tow vehicle? 🚘 Be sure to look up the tow rating, maximum loaded weight, and the maximum tongue weight that the vehicle is capable of safely towing.

Trailer Components:
Understanding the many components that make up your trailer is important to ensure you are ready to tow safely. It is essential to understand the importance of adequate brakes, properly inflated and rated tires, crossed safety chains, and working lights in order to tow safely. 🚨⛓️ Learn more about the many components that make up trailers here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/trailer-components. #TrailerParts #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety #KeepOnHauling
🔍 Trailer Tip: The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is like a trailer's fingerprint, revealing key info like model year and origin. Make sure your VIN label is visible on the left side of your trailer! If it's missing, don't worry - there might be a hidden VIN somewhere. Contact the manufacturer or your DMV for help tracking it down.
Cargo Securement:
Improperly secured cargo can cause weight redistribution that could cause trailer sway or additional stress on the trailer and tow vehicle as well as the possibility of losing cargo on the roadway, creating a danger for other drivers. ⚠️ Learn more about cargo securement here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/cargo-securement. ⚠️
When thinking about cargo securement, it’s important to remember that you are securing the load for sudden stops and trailer sway, not just for normal driving conditions. #CargoSecurement #TrailerSafetyWeek #TrailerSafety #KeepOnHauling
Federal regulation governs cargo securement for various commodities and for commercial towing. While these regulations apply to a specific towing audience, these practices might still be advisable in non-commercial settings. 💡 Learn more about cargo securement regulations here: https://buff.ly/43J5QtW
